Found on Sproat Lake is the world’s two surviving aircraft of their kind. You will find them moored on Sproat Lake and visible from the provincial park. Their overall length is 36.6 meters with a wingspan of 61 meters. The tanks in the bellies of these planes hold 27.21 tons of water and they’re used throughout the summer to fight forest fires over the province, and around the world.

These passenger and cargo vessels are based in Port Alberni and serve the Barkley Sound and Broken Group Islands area. The scenic cruises are amongst the most memorable to travel to the Barkley Sound area. Kayakers and canoeists can be picked up or dropped off at various points along the routes. Located on 13 hectares of beautiful forested land in the scenic Alberni Valley, the McLean Mill National Historic Site offers a unique look into the past with this 1926 steam sawmill. See the rustic beginnings of today’s forest industry and experience the excitement as the Mill steams up and takes you through a close-up look at each step of the milling process, performed with original steam technology. Watch the fascinating migration of trout and salmon as they jump the fish ladder into the hatchery. The fish in the large rearing tanks and ponds have travelled from Stamp River Provincial Park. Open from 8am – 4pm. Call 250-724-6521 for more information.
This 327-hectare park is an amalgamation of Stamp Falls and Money’s Pool provincial parks. You will find lovely waterfalls and several scenic trails featured at Stamp River. The Rollin Arts Centre houses a fine arts gallery, a gift shop, and classroom, office and storage facilities. The Gardens are a show piece for the community, especially the traditional Japanese garden – a gift from Abashiri, Port Alberni’s sister city. You will also find a replica of Port Alberni’s first bandstand, and the elegant concrete balustrade and classical fountain, both designed by Port Alberni resident, Peter Szachiv. Located in the Alberni Valley, this lake sees a lot of activity. It is the runway for the huge Martin Mars water bombers that hurry off to extinguish forest fires. Sproat Lake’s warm water attracts many swimmers, water skiers, wind surfers and anglers. Hiking trails exist, one leading to a prehistoric petroglyph, K’ak’awin, which is assumed to be a mythical marine creature. On summer days enjoy a fabulous ride to the McLean Mill National Historic Site aboard the Alberni Pacific Railway’s Number 7 Steam Locomotive. Trains leave from the restored E&N Railway Station at the entrance to the Harbour Quay Thursday – Monday with 2 runs per day to the McLean Mill. Trains do not run on Tuesday & Wednesday. Departures are from the restored 1912 Port Alberni Railway Station at the Gateway to Alberni Harbour Quay.
